What is a licensed timber buyer?
To commercially purchase timber or logs in Indiana, state law requires timber buyers to be licensed and bonded with the State of Indiana. This includes the purchase of timber on shares, lump sum or other means. There are two license types - Timber Buyer or Agent.
A license is not required to occasionally purchase logs or timber for personal use.
The Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (PLA) maintains the database of licensed buyers. The licensing program is managed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry. |
A Licensed Timber Buyer is a person engaged in the business of buying timber from timber growers for sawing into lumber, processing, or resale.

A Licensed Agent is an individual who represents a licensed timber buyer in effecting or attempting to effect purchases of timber.

Timber Sale Contracts: When selling timber is highly recommended to have a written timber sale contract. A well written contract provides protection to the woodland owner, timber buyer and the land to be harvested.
